Morgenster releases its two 2011 red Bordeaux blends
published on:

Morgenster owner Giulio Bertrand showcased his two 2011 red Bordeaux blends in April this year to coincide with the annual visit, for the 18th year, of his consultant winemaker Pierre Lurton of Chateau Cheval Blanc. He has now released these wines into the South African market.

This is the second Morgenster harvest for winemaker Henry Kotzé from a dry vintage which required close monitoring of water stress levels of the vines – an important tool in the viticulturist’s toolkit. The increasing maturity of the vineyards, which vary in age from 7 to 18 years, facilitated the viticulture team’s efforts to bring the fruit to the ripeness Henry wanted. Winemaking was in line with Morgenster’s philosophy of encapsulating the best possible blend of the vintage to make it a true reflection of the terroir and what could be achieved under the harvest conditions .According to Henry, the result is a wine with great depth and complexity, which he punts as outlasting 20 years.

As usual, the 2011 blends were shaped in collaboration with the Estate’s consultant winemaker, Pierre Lurton of Chateau Cheval Blanc, letting the vintage determine the blend. Morgenster Reserve 2011 contains 59% Merlot, 21% Cabernet Sauvignon and 20% Petit Verdot.

A bright, deep plum red introduces a striking opulence on the nose, layering red and black fruit from Merlot offset by fragrant spice of Petit Verdot and blueberry, blackberry and cassis from Cabernet Sauvignon. On the palate Morgenster’s famous silky soft cashmere tannins and sweetness fill the mouth. There are abundant classical flavours of pencil shavings, fresh paprika and concentrations of sweet cherry and black currant.

Suggested food pairings: Most young, bold Bordeaux blends pair well with something hearty and flavoursome like a prime piece of beef, lamb, venison or duck. It is also a wine to sip on its own for the enjoyment of uncovering its complex secrets.

Morgenster Reserve 2011 was awarded 4½ stars in the 2015 John Platter Guide. Available from the Estate, Morgenster’s online shop http://shop.morgenster.co.za/ or selected retail outlets. Recommended retail price R385.00.

Morgenster Lourens River Valley 2011

The Morgenster Lourens River Valley 2011 blend is comprised of 59% Cabernet Franc, 30% Merlot, 6% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Petit Verdot.

An opaque centre with lighter brick red edges introduces a nose of sweet whiffs of blackberry with ripe bramble and fresh plum. Cinnamon and nutmeg influences come from Cabernet Franc with classical herbaceous notes of lavender, thyme, coffee and toffee. The wine offers an elegant entry, plush and immediately mouth filling and rewarding. All the enticing sweetness evident on the nose returns to the fore. Acidity, savoury and sweetness blend harmoniously and the rounded silky tannins are soft and velvety.
