published on:

Morgenster Reserve 2011 red Bordeaux blend has been listed by Woolworths in 32 selected stores

Judi Dyer, CEO of Morgenster, said: “This is the first time one of our wines is in Woolworths, although they have stocked our Morgenster extra virgin olive oil range for some time. We both share a target market of consumers who care about fine food and wines and we are therefore delighted with this partnership”.

Morgenster Reserve 2011 was awarded 4½ stars in the 2015 John Platter Guide and will retail at R399.95 on Woolworths shelves.

Morgenster Reserve 2011 - an opulent wine from established vineyards

This is the second Morgenster harvest for winemaker Henry Kotzé from a dry vintage which required close monitoring of water stress levels of the vines. The increasing maturity of the vineyards, which vary in age from 7 to 18 years, facilitated the viticulture team’s efforts to bring the fruit to the ripeness Henry wanted. Winemaking was in line with Morgenster’s philosophy of finding the best possible blend of the vintage to make it a true reflection of the terroir and what could be achieved under the harvest conditions. According to Henry, the result is a wine with great depth and complexity, which he punts as outlasting 20 years.

As usual, the 2011 blend was shaped in collaboration with the Estate’s consultant winemaker, Pierre Lurton of Chateau Cheval Blanc, letting the vintage determine the blend. Morgenster Reserve 2011 contains 59% Merlot, 21% Cabernet Sauvignon and 20% Petit Verdot.

Winemaker’s tasting notes:

A bright, deep plum red introduces a striking opulence on the nose, layering red and black fruit from Merlot offset by fragrant spice of Petit Verdot and blueberry, blackberry and cassis from Cabernet Sauvignon.

On the palate Morgenster’s famous silky soft cashmere tannins and sweetness fill the mouth. There are abundant classical flavours of pencil shavings, fresh paprika and concentrations of sweet cherry and black currant.

Suggested food pairings: As with most young, bold Bordeaux blends, Morgenster Reserve 2011 pairs well with something hearty and flavoursome like a prime piece of beef, lamb, venison or duck. It is also a wine to sip on its own for the sheer enjoyment of uncovering its complex secrets.
