Something old, something new… Morgenster releases eight wines
published on:

Morgenster Wine and Olive Estate in Somerset West outside Cape Town has long been known for its philosophy of creating Bordeaux styled red wines that age well. Owner Giulio Bertrand releases these wines in batches only after they have had the benefit of ageing in pristine conditions.

Owner Giulio Bertrand releases these wines in batches only after they have had the benefit of ageing in pristine conditions. Having started this practice in 2000, he can offer his markets volume and continuity in unique vertical collections of several vintages of Morgenster Estate Reserve and Morgenster Lourens River Valley. Hailing from 10 to 22-year old vineyards the two Morgenster Bordeaux offer longevity of up to 20 years.

Similarly, Bertrand’s investment in producing superior Italian styled wines grown and made on his South African farm from imported Italian clones has created vertical collections of Nebbiolo and Super Tuscan wines which age well. He is now releasing the 12th crop of his two Italian Collection reds which have horizons of up to 20 years. Bertrand however also likes to say that there is always something new out of Morgenster.

During early May 2018 cellar master Henry Kotzé introduced eight wines to media and the trade, two being 2014 Morgenster Estate Reserve and Morgenster Lourens River Valley Bordeaux red blends and two 2015 Italian Collection reds – Tosca (a Sangiovese led Super Tuscan) and Nabucco (100% Nebbiolo).

He also introduced the Estate’s first bubbly, Morgenster Cuvée Alessandra 2016 made in the Méthode Cap Classique. Named for one of Bertrand’s daughters, it was made from 100% Cabernet Franc and spent nine months in barrel and 16 months on the lees. The result is a nose with plenty of fruit, with biscuit and yeast coming to the fore, backed by minerality and river stone neutrality. The palate reveals a soft lingering mousse with a very fine persistent bubble and an expression of Cabernet Franc fruit in a sweeter style, even though no dosage was added.

To round out the line-up, there were two wines that reflected the 2018 vintage: Morgenster Sauvignon Blanc 2018 from the Estate’s Single Varietal range and ever popular Morgenster Caruso 2018 rosé from the Italian Collection. The eighth wine was Morgenster White Reserve 2015, a white Bordeaux blend made in the classic style from 55% Sauvignon Blanc and 45% Semillon It had first been unveiled the previous year and was re-released to display a year’s evolution in bottle.
