In The Vineyard
A slow dry January followed a very wet and windy November. The end of February and beginning of March saw a long hot spell of 10 days rock the ripening. With sugar accumulation hurtling into 5th gear, picking was finished in record time.
The 1.8 hectares of Sangiovese on Morgenster are maturing and fulfilling their earlier promise of producing excellent wines according to owner Giulio Bertrand's dream of making wine from the Italian varieties of his native home. This is the seventh crop from these prized vineyards. By combining Sangiovese with traditional Bordeaux grapes, wines called Super Tuscan are produced. With Bertrand's naming of the wines in his Italian Collection according to his favorite operas and singer, it was inevitable that this blend would be called Tosca. Its subtle tannins, big bouquet and easy pairing with most dishes have boosted its popularity with an appreciative public.
