Tasting Notes
Colour: A sparkling bright red with a see through garnet heart, lighter towards the edges.
Nose: In line with the best Nebbiolo wines in the world, this nose is intriguingly different from the typical. It promotes spice and flavors of the earth rather than flouting fruit sweetness. There is a herbaceous intensity of lilac, thyme, lavender and basil flower and a spicy sweetness of cinnamon, nutmeg and clove.
Palate: The flavours are complex, lingering and enticing, put together with sweet strawberry, pomegranate and a cherry acidity zing. Tannins abound and form the tactile aspect to a thought provoking experience.
Ageing Potential
Refined and deeply nuanced, Nabucco 2012 will need a few years to come together and will still offer much pleasure at age 20.
Blend Information
100% Nebbiolo
Food Suggestions
Great with a prime cut of beef accompanied by a rich sauce. It also complements mature cheeses, dark cacao chocolate and even something sweet.
In The Vineyard
A colder, wetter winter than usual preceded even budding. Cold weather continued until the warmest December in 48 years, followed by a wetter than usual January and February. The greater variation between day and night temperatures positively impacted on grape quality during the ripening period and resulted in a good harvest.

Vineyard: Stellenbosch
Region: Helderberg ward

Vintage Conditions
The 2012 growing season was slow and smooth. A dry winter led to reduced yields, with a cool summer allowing grapes to ripen gradually, producing promising quality
In The Cellar

Maturation: 18 months maturation period in barrel: 5% in new tight grain French oak, 95% in third fill barrels

Bottling on 20 April 2015

Additional Information
The 2013 vintage was Giulio Bertrand’s 10th crop from his treasured 1.6 hectare Nebbiolo vineyard. Made from imported Italian clones in the Italian manner on the Estate this wine delivers the feeling of gravitas normally associated with international Nebbiolo’s. With not many wines made from this cultivar in South Africa, Morgenster Italian Collection Nabucco is seen as a benchmark by many, validating Bertrand’s passion and investment to make great Italian wines on Morgenster.

This is a complete wine with heaps of elegance and essence. There is great underlying power and some plushness from the Italian varietal. Refined and deeply nuanced, Nabucco 2013 will need a few years to come together and will still offer much pleasure at age 20.
